One of my great pleasures in life is ballet-from running around Miss Bannister’s dancing academy aged 6 to now being able to watch and enjoy stunning performances from the wonderful RNZB-which amongst other things was nominated this year for a UK Critics Circle National Dance Award for Outstanding Company. Their line-up for 2013 has just been announced. It will be a celebration of 60 years of classical ballet in New Zealand and will tour the length and breadth of the country: no mean feat. Six years on the Board of the RNZB has given me an appreciation of the governance issues involved in the NPF sector and the challenges faced by it in these straightened times but a stronger than ever conviction that the development of the arts is a marker of a civilised society which we all need to support!
